Custody Versus Visitation

The terms “custody” and “visitation” or sometimes used interchangeably, but they actually have different meanings. For example, custody is a broader term.  It and can refer to either legal or physical custody.  On the other hand, visitation refers to the time you spend with your child.

Child Custody, Visitation & the Parenting Plan

The parenting schedule is contained in the parenting plan.  When one parent has sole legal custody, the other parent’s time with the kids is generally referred to as “visitation.”  When the parents share joint legal custody, their respective time with the kids is generally referred to as “parenting time.”

Supervised Visitation

Connecticut courts can also order what’s called “supervised visitation.”  Generally speaking, courts prefer that children see their parents if possible.  The court has supervised visitation as an alternative it’s concerned about a child’s safety with one parent.
